Otsuka Group Introduces Wind Power Derived Electricity as “Self-Generated Renewable Energy” to Promote Carbon Neutrality Initiatives
January 6, 2026
Otsuka Holdings Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Japan; President and Representative Director, CEO: Makoto Inoue) has introduced electricity generated from wind power for the first time within the group.
This electricity is generated by three wind turbines at the Otoyo Wind Farm, owned and operated by Shikoku Electric Power Co., Inc. (Shikoku Electric Power), with which the Otsuka group has been working toward achieving carbon neutrality. By entering a long-term contract with Shikoku Electric Power, the entire output from this source will become part of the Otsuka group’s self-generated renewable energy*1. As a result, the share of self-generated renewable energy within the group is expected to reach approximately 5%. The introduction of wind power under this initiative is equivalent to an annual reduction of approximately 1,000 tons of CO2 emissions*2.
The Otsuka group has established the 2050 Environmental Vision, "Net Zero," which aims to reduce the total environmental impact of its business activities to zero. As part of this vision, the group has set the following 2028 targets for achieving carbon neutrality: 20% self-generated renewable energy and 50% reduction in CO2 emissions (compared to 2017 levels). To achieve these targets, the group has implemented integrated energy management in Japan to manage energy more strategically across the group, including the bulk procurement of renewable electricity. Under this framework, the group has installed multiple solar power generation approaches utilizing both on-site PPAs*3 and off-site PPAs*4 to expand the use of self-generated renewable electricity.
Solar power generation faces challenges in ensuring stable electricity supply due to its dependence on weather conditions and inability to generate power at night. To ensure a stable supply of electricity not only from solar power but also from a diverse range of self-generated renewable energy sources such as wind and hydroelectric power, the Otsuka group has introduced electricity derived from wind power.
The group aims to have a more stable power portfolio composed of diverse renewable energy sources. To achieve this, it plans to collaborate with Shikoku Electric Power to introduce self-generated renewable energy derived from hydroelectric source, including initiatives such as enhancing the capacity of the hydroelectric power plants in the Yoshino River system. The Otsuka group will continue to promote group-wide efforts to reduce its environmental impact through the use of new technologies and solutions with the aim of contributing to achieve a decarbonized society and, ultimately, a sustainable society.
*1 Self-generated renewable energy: Renewable energy generated through the group's facilities or generated in collaboration with power producers, etc.
*2 CO2 reduction amount compared to using standard electricity.
*3 Power Purchase Agreement: A contract for purchasing electricity. On-site PPA: A mechanism for purchasing electricity from renewable energy power generation facilities installed on the site premises that receive electricity.
*4 Off-site PPA: A mechanism for purchasing electricity from renewable energy power generation facilities located outside the site premises, which use electricity from the power grid.
