Otsuka Group Completes Construction of Energy Management Building ーAdvancing efficiency of group-wide integrated energy management—
July 24, 2023
Otsuka Holdings Co., Ltd. (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Japan; President and Representative Director, CEO: Tatsuo Higuchi) announced today the completion of the Otsuka Group Energy Management Building, which serves as the central hub for the group’s integrated energy service. This facility will provide group-wide integrated management of energy (electricity and steam), including bulk procurement of electricity from renewable sources, forecasting of power demand and supply, and the distribution of electricity generated within the group to various business units. Through a state-of-the-art data management system using various IoT sensors and cameras, the facility will also manage water, electricity, and heat within Kawauchi area plants, as well as wastewater from production activities.
In April 2022, the Otsuka group as Power Producer and Supplier (retail electricity provider) established an integrated energy service structure as part of its 2050 Environmental Vision, “Net Zero,” which aims to reduce the total environmental impact of its business activities to zero. Starting in the Shikoku area, where many of the group’s production facilities are located, the service expanded to the Tohoku, Hokuriku, and Kanto areas in April 2023. Using the newly introduced unified platform resulting from this management building’s completion, the group will optimize power generation control (cogeneration*1 and solar power generation system) and manage self-wheeling*2. Moving forward, the group will further enhance its integrated energy management centered on this new facility.
The Otsuka group remains committed to expanding the use of electricity from renewable sources and pursuing the optimal energy mix*3 within the group. The group will continue to extend the scope of group companies in Japan that benefit from this centralized energy management approach, striving to balance business growth with environmental responsiveness. By leveraging new technologies and solutions, the Otsuka group is united in its commitment to contribute to a decarbonized and, ultimately, sustainable society.
*1 System that uses fuels such as natural gas, LP gas, etc. to generate power via engines, turbines, fuel cells, etc., while recovering the waste heat generated during the process. With this system, heat and electricity can be used without being wasted.
*2 Electricity generated within the Otsuka group will be efficiently supplied to the group’s business sites.
*3 Choosing the best ratio of diverse energy sources in consideration of the environment, economy and stable supply of energy.
