May 31, 2022
Otsuka Holdings Co., Ltd. (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Japan; President and Representative Director, CEO: Tatsuo Higuchi) announced today that the Otsuka group as the Power Producer and Supplier (retail electricity provider) established a new integrated energy service structure, as part of its 2050 Environmental Vision, “Net Zero”, which aims to reduce the total environmental impact of its business activities to zero. In the future, electricity from renewable sources will be procured from power producers and elsewhere, and electricity generated within the Otsuka group will be efficiently supplied to the group’s business sites.
Thus far, the Otsuka group has been actively moving forward with the reduction of CO2 emissions by introducing CO2-free electricity*1 derived from renewable energy sources that do not emit CO2 at all 23 of its plants in Japan. The group is also accomplishing this by installing solar power generation equipment for in-house consumption and optimizing energy use through fuel conversion using cogeneration systems.*2 With this new integrated energy service system, the Otsuka group will pursue the optimal energy mix*3 in an effort to further reduce CO2 emissions. These efforts will start in Tokushima, where the group has many production facilities, and then be expanded to the rest of Japan. The power in the Shikoku region will be sourced from hydroelectric power generation on the Yoshino River system etc., which is associated with the birthplace of the Otsuka group. It will be generated by Shikoku Electric Power Co., Inc. In cooperation with the company the Otsuka group is also working to increase the capacity of the Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Yoshino River system etc.
The Otsuka group will continue to contribute to the realization of a decarbonized and ultimately sustainable society through the utilization of new technologies and solutions.
*1 Virtually CO2-free electricity utilizing environmental value derived from renewable energy that does not emit CO2
*2 A system that uses natural gas, petroleum, LP gas, etc., as fuel to generate electricity with engines, turbines, etc., while reusing the heat without waste.
*3 Choosing the best ratio of diversification of energy sources in the energy policy.
